Description

We have had Great Crested Flycatchers nest in our boxes before, but this was the first time they decided to nest in the Screech Owl box. We watched both male and female bring long pieces of nesting material to the box. We had a “birds eye” view from our lawn chairs and watched them eventually bring food to the box. One day when we were watching them, a Coopers Hawk sat in a nearby tree and swooped down on the female. I really thought the Coopers got her, but he didn’t as she showed up at the box the next day. This photo was taken on June 5, 2012.

I had great crested flycatchers one year, and the next year, some wrens got to it early. The great crested still came, but looked in, seeing eggs already there, and left! This year, I’m not going to letwrens nest! I loved watching the great crested. They are fierce, when protecting their nest! I watched one, attack a squirell on ground, pecking away at him!
