I found two of these hummingbird nest in my back woods, are these abandoned? Do humming birds come back to their nests?
These are not hummingbird nests. Their nest are about the size of a 25c piece.
Oh! Do you know what they are then?
It is hard to tell the size, which is a crucial part in figuring out who the nest belongs to, so if you could put an object in it for size comparison, that would make it easier. But from my experience, that looks like a song song sparrow nest. They sometimes return to the same nesting area every year, so they probably renovated it, which makes sense, considering the height of the nest. If the nest is near a marsh, swamp or water it could also belong to a swamp sparrow.
Thank you! It is very close to a cedar swamp, in fact the second nest is in the swamp.
Swamp Sparrows nest only in wetlands. In the northern parts of the range, they use fens and bogs that have patches of open water, especially those dotted with shrubs. They also nest in peat bogs with little open water.
