    She’s beautiful!
    What species?

  2. Ava Johnson says:

Looks like a female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird!

  3. Paula says:

Very likely.. or maybe a black-chinned?

  4. Ava Johnson says:

Well, Black-Chinned Hummingbirds don’t live in Vermont and the other two species that are found in your area are rare.

Thanks everyone. Will keep an eye out for the male. He was around last year now that I think about it.

    Great photos

Ants trying to get to the nectar?

  10. Ava Johnson says:

Oh! I just now saw the ants in your photo. You should probably find a way to deter them.

  11. Paula says:

there is an “ant moat” in both feeders. Just cleaned and replaced nectar yesterday…but will do so again today. Never seen black carpenter ants in there before! Very hot and humid here!

Just cleaned and replaced nectar yesterday. Will repeat today. There are built in “ant moats” in each feeder.
Never seen black carpenter ants in the feeders before. Very hot and humid here…maybe the kooky weather.

  13. Paaula says:

I’ve seen tiny flying insects/gnats in the nectar but never the carpenter ants. I cleaned and disinfected and put in fresh nectar. Not sure how much help the “moat” is!

  14. Ava Johnson says:

We don’t have a problem with ants because ours is attached to a window.

    She’s gorgeous! Great shots!

We have the sugar ants take over our feeder sometimes. We wash it off with water and re fill
