Description

This nesting place belonged to a pair of House Finches last year, but this year when they attempted to nest there again, a pair of Mourning Doves pushed them out. Kind of an unusual place to put a nest, isn’t it?

Does anyone know if some birds can share nests? I think this could be a possibility because I’ve seen the House Finches go in it, but the Mourning Doves have an egg.

Hi, Birds of different species do not share nests, however, many species do use, or attempt to take over, the nest of another bird. The House Finch and Mourning Doves you’re seeing are likely competing for the same space, and will do so until one succeeds. You might be interested in placing a Mourning Dove nest cone, nearby to help reduce this competition. Keep an eye on the nest, and let us know how it turns out!

I have a morning dove who is nesting and it’s approximately 2 stories high where the nest is and a house Finch keeps trying to take the nest I don’t see any eggs on the grounds when I’m assuming the eggs are still in the nest. However there was 2 days where I did not see the dove in the nest and now she is back..

I have a House Finch (I think) nest that abandoned three unhatched eggs (out of five ?). About thee weeks later a Morning Dove showed up and now seems to be sitting on the three (infertile?) Finch eggs. What’s going on here?
I will add that about six years ago, Morning Doves built a nest at the exact same spot and fledged two doves, and ever since I took their nest away (on top of our front door light fixture) we would get a ‘dove vist’ but nothing else. UNTIL NOW.

We have a pair of red house finches who recently built a nest in a wreath just outside our patio door. We can see them clearly through the glass and have stopped using the door while they’re nesting. The mother just hatched two or three eggs in the past few days. However, this morning a mourning dove was hanging around. The male finch was trying to fight her off but she eventually roosted right on top of the mother finch and babies in their nest. I walked over near the door and it spooked her away and the finches seem to be ok. Anyone ever hear of such a thing?
