Small Woodpecker

Cute little woodpecker that visits everyday. Not sure if it's the downy or hairy woodpecker. I also have hummingbirds several times a day and a beautiful goldfinch that I'm trying to get pics of.

Awsome! Seems you have quite a few visitors at your feeder!
Here’s a quick tip on how to ID Downy verses Hairy woodpeckers: If the beak is the size of the birds head, it’s a Downy. If it’s longer, it’s a Hairy.
Hope this helps! Good luck birding.

Thanks for the tip Kylie. I purchased a new camera and hope to get better pics of my feathered friends. They are so awesome ~ interesting and fun to watch!

Looks like a Hairy WP, As Kylie said it depends on the beak size. Be aware that in different geographical areas the downys can have different lengths of the bill. Size is also another means of id: Hairy 2.3 oz/ about the size of a smallish robin. Downy 0.95 oz, or about the size of a large sparrow like the white-crowned sparrow. This one appears to be a Hairy because of the size of the bill compared to the head, along with the larger black spur on the upper breast/side of the neck or malar.

Cool! What type of camera do you have?

Your hawk pic is downright breathtaking!

Can’t take credit for the hawk..someone else took that. I wanted to get Nikon Cool Pix…none in stock. Opted for a Panasonic…got good reviews..will give it a try. I’m just a novice.

Ahh. Well, good luck birding and picture taking!
