Two speckled eggs in what started out as a black capped chickadee nest. Either chickadee or wren eggs…not sure. 5-23-23 You can also see the eggs in a previous pic I posted titled “whose nest?” I missed them earlie r~ well hidden.
House Wren eggs
Looks like bc chickadees or carolina.
I looked on eBird at House Wren nests and their eggs are white with light brown speckles. Chickadee’s speckles are darker.
Is the wren incubating the eggs or the chickadee?
No one is incubating at this point. Many birds don’t start incubating until all the eggs are laid…so they all hatch around the same time. I’ll keep checking to see if additional eggs are laid and watch for which bird enters/exits. The eggs are tiny and well hidden…a BC Chickadee trait . 5-24-23
Do you take the a nest out for the after the 1st brood and let the birds rebuild the nest for their 2nd brood or do I leave it in for their 2nd brood
I have never removed any nests. That being said I’ve never had a nest in a bird box before. I’ve had House Finches re-use the same nest in the Christmas wreath.
I hope this brood does good! After they fledge you should remove the nest so that the parents can build a new one if they want to attempt a second brood. We had baby Eastern Bluebirds and after they fledged we removed the nest and about a week later there was a new nest in the box.
Thanks! My birds have finished their 1st brood, not all of them.
Looks more like a chickadee’s nest to me. Carolina wrens, in my experience, use a lot more leaves and less soft material than chickadees. And speaking of removing nests from bird boxes, I usually just remove the nests at the end of the nesting season to get it prepped for nest year.
Good advice ~ thanks.
