Weirdest Nest? I Have Ever Seen

This was near fresh water on a log near a dock. What is it. Almost looked like bubble gum stretched over eggs. I can't even imagine what this is

  1. Holly Grant, Project Assistant says:

Hi Laurie, this is not a bird’s nest. This is most likely a fungus/slime mold in the genus “Reticularia.” They often grown on decaying wood, and can change a lot within even just a few hours. If you check the google images for “Reticularia” you’ll see that some have this same “plastic bag” look to them, which indicates they are a bit further along in their fruiting cycle.
