Description

A Black- Capped Chickadee started this nest in the Bluebird box back in April. You can see the moss base. House Sparrows and House Wrens tried to take it over. I don’t know which bird has added all this extra material on top…any ideas? No eggs visible. 5-21-23

    House wrens?

  2. Texas Bird Family says:

If the wren is nesting than it is most likely the wren’s material.

  3. Holly Grant, Project Assistant says:

House Wrens use only small twigs in their nests. This soft material could be the start of a mouse nest, or from a titmouse or chickadee.

Very interesting…I saw the House Wren fly in there yesterday. I’ll keep checking…very odd.
Started out as a BC Chickadee nest, then House Sparrows invaded then House Wrens. Never put up boxes before.

There are two brownish red small speckled eggs in the nest…they were kind of hidden.

Could very well be. Also think there are spider egg sacs in there as well…typical of House Wrens. Plus a wren was the last bird observed entering box. 5-24-23
