Whose Nest Is This?

Well it’s hard to tell with out the dimensions. My guess is a House Finch.

  2. Holly Faulkner, Project Assistant says:

Hi Irene, This nest is a bit messy for many species that typically build their nests on human structures. House Finches normally use finer materials, and do not typically use leaves when building a nest. This looks like a Carolina Wren nest to us, though they typically have domed nests, so one way to confirm would be if you see an entrance hole to the nest, rather than seeing the eggs sitting in an open cup. Mourning Doves also make a messy nest, but typically stick to using grasses and sticks.
Looking at the eggs and the adults are the easiest ways to help identify a nest – let us know what you find either here or by emailing us nestwatch@cornell.edu.
