2023 Nesting Season Overview Part Two

Birds Carrying Nesting Material, Part 2

A few more of my favorite photos from this breeding season of birds carrying nesting material. I monitored the Mourning Dove nest for Nest Watch.

Morning Dove.

Mourning Dove Sitting on Eggs

This is the second time in 3 years that a pair of mourning doves nested in this old hanging planter. The location is just outside the glass patio door underneath the eaves of a 3-story condo building. This picture was taken on day14 of incubation.

Mourning Dove Babies

Mourning Doves built a nest on our front porch pillar and successfully raised two.

The Sweetest Doves

We caught this pair of doves on the fence, grooming each other, they then mated and continued grooming each other.

Mom dove with two fledglings

Mourning doves have been nesting in my atrium for about 5 years. Here’s the latest batch of fledglings with their mother. It took about nine days from hatching to flying away!

Baby Mourning Dove with deformed beak!

Today we saw this baby Mourning Dove with a badly deformed beak. It tried to eat but the milo and corn were too big. Will it be able to live like this? The other doves were chasing it and being mean.

Mourning Doves at Chase Bank

I saw a dove fly up to a light and I noticed that it was a nest! The male was sitting on the nest while the female looked at him and flew away.

Injured female Mourning Dove!!

This female dove came to the feeder and birdbath. She has a fairly deep wound but acts normal. Does anyone have any idea what those yellow and orange balls in her wound are?

The first baby dove of spring! and on eBird!

Sunning Doves

Sunning is when birds lie on a fence or the ground and spread one (or both) of their wings and their tail out. Birds often do this on sunny days. A bird that is sunning may look injured or even dead, but this is normal bird behavior and helps rid the bird of parasites like mites and lice.

Female Mourning Dove with strange growth

Does anyone know what’s wrong with this dove? She has huge puffs of feathers coming out of her neck. She has been like this since last year, and she has gotten much worse! she can eat and acts ok but I’m just curious.

Backyard Birds part 1

So many backyard birds that I never see! Cowbirds, finches, chickadees, and more!

Sweet Pair of Mourning Doves

I was lucky enough to witness a pair of Mourning Doves copulating on a fallen tree. I was never able to locate the nest but this was still a special experience. The doves rubbed heads before breeding, afterwards, the male fanned his tail feathers in the direction of the female for a few minutes, why did he do that?

Possibly injured Mourning Dove

I’ve been seeing this dove for months now. His wing looks like it’s falling off. I’ve also seen two birds with black intentions on their neck and belly. (Adult mockingbird and young male sparrow) Also, two birds were all puffed up and leaning over. Their beaks were open. (adult mockingbird and female sparrow) The mockingbird wasn’t moving for about 3 hours. The sparrow had trouble walking and was acting weird. There also was a mockingbird fledgling. I noticed it was very skinny and different looking. Then I saw it weeks after and it was very skinny and had matted feathers. I saw yesterday that an adult mockingbird was attacking the fledgling! Why do you think this is?

Do I Look Like a Parrot….maybe?

This female Mourning Dove looks like a parrot for some reason. Maybe it’s her tail or the way she’s sitting?

Surprised by Mourning Doves

My German Shepard and I pass underneath my avocado tree many times a day. I was so surprised when one day a Mourning Dove flushed from the tree, and when I looked up there was a scrabby nest with a Mourning Dove and almost full-sized chick!

The Mourning Dove Stare Down

I saw this mourning dove on my drive way and I decided to get a picture. This guy let me get pretty close to him,and honestly I think he was sleeping with his eyes open. It was like he was a statue.

What kind of chicks are these?

My dad took me to the Kentucky castle’s farm yesterday, and we found four active nests.

Doves in White Lilac Bush

Mourning Dove chick finally fledged!

I wasn’t able to see inside the nest for a couple of visits because the parents were so protective and stayed on the nest, but now I don’t have to check it anymore!

This little guy likes staring contests!

Waiting for Mourning Doves

A pair of mourning doves have selected a large pine tree for their nest. The female was working on the nest this morning while the male kept watch. It’s a decent nest for a mourning dove, it has a fairly concave shape. Now we are waiting for eggs!

A grackle and a dove

My best photos yet!

Today i got to get up close and personal to these beautiful birds!

Mourning Dove bathing in the evening sun

I found this Mourning Dove resting on my porch.

Mourning Dove Takeover!

What used to be a House Finch nest is now officially a Mourning Dove’s. They already have 1 egg, and I’m hoping there will be another one in the nest when I check the nest on Saturday. They almost always have 2 eggs so I’m hoping this nest will be a success.

Why does this Mourning Dove have tufts of feathers sticking out of it’s head and back?

A Miracle miracle before my eyes.

These images were taken for my NestWatch Project. This attempt was a successful one because the two eggs hatched and the fledglings matured and flew away as soon as they were capable of doing it.

Love is in the air!

My mated Mourning Dove couple. The male was preening the female the other day on the deck rail, and it was just the sweetest thing to see. Last year they nested under and to the back of my deck. Hoping they find a good spot again this year!

MOURNING DOVE: TWO IMAGES OF PRE-COPULATORY BEHAVIORS, AND THE COPULATORY ACT

MOURNING DOVE ARE PRESENT YEAR AROUND AT OUR FEEDERS. UP TO 5 WILL ROOST TOGETHER ON THE DECK OR IN NEARBY TREES. IT IS OUR ASSUMPTION THAT THESE 5 ARE AN INTACT “FAMILY” GROUP FROM THE PRIOR BREEDING SEASON–IF A 6TH BIRD APPEARS, IT IS DRIVEN AWAY. THESE DOVE ARE REMARKABLY PATIENT WHILE AWAITING TO FEED AT PERCHING NEARBY EITHER DOSING IN (APPARENT) OBLIVION OR SCANNING OTHER SPECIES MUCH MORE FRANTIC COMING AND GOINGS. WHEN IN THE TRAY FEEDER, THIS SPECIES IS DOMINANT NOT TOLERATING INTRA-SPECIFIC INTERLOPERS OF LESSER BULK. STELLER’S JAY MAY DISPLACE THESE DOVE, BUT NOT WITHOUT A TUSSLE AND CONSIDERABLE “BULKING-UP” BY THE DOVE. BREEDING BEGINS MARCH AND COPULATION IS RECORDED AS LATE AS 18 JULY.

Fledgling Mourning Dove

A Mourning Dove pair built a nest in a old robin nest which successfully fledged 3 baby robins. The doves raised two babies. Both of them fledged successfully that night before or that morning. (photo taken before sunrise) Both doves were there but one was scared off. Shortly after taking the photo, the other dove flew off too.

Baby Mourning Doves

Mourning Dove Nest on our Patio

A pair of very attentive mourning doves choose our window box for their nest! We lovingly continue to observe them, being careful not to go out unless it’s to water our plants. It’s well sheltered from the sun & wind, however perhaps a little exposed to bird predators. Have made our silent presence know when a crow attempted an egg theft one morning ??

Mourning dove rolling egg into place

Mourning dove nesting in my hanging basket

I hang two flower baskets by my front door every year. This year, the very day after I hung these I saw the beginnings of a nest. I left it be. A bird would be way cooler than some annual flowers. Sure enough, within a few days I saw a mourning dove sitting on there. So our front door is off limits for awhile. Mama bird has a good spot. The overhang is protecting her from the rain right now. She’s out of reach of pretty much any predators. I have lots of pine trees in my yard and they have nested there many times. This is a first for the flower pot. Very cool indeed.
