Baby Cowbird

This baby cowbird is a daily visitor to my feeders.

Bluebonnet’s Fledgling

I have been watching Bluebonnet (Yes, all mockingbirds besides The Peep and The Adversary must have Texas names) gather nesting material, and I have heard her baby calling from the nest. Yesterday her baby fledged from the nest.

The First Baby Mockingbird of The Year!

This baby mockingbird was eating suet and then he jumped down to look for strawberries. After he left, his mother came and ate suet. I was curious who this female mockingbird was and it turned out that she is The Peep’s mother! We believe that The Peep’s father died due to his absence when The Peep was a fledgling. This means that this baby is The Peep’s half-brother!

Baby Cardinal

First baby cardinal of the year! I think it’s a female.

4 baby finches!

Mr. and Mrs. Finch have four baby finches. Sadly, neither of them wants to care for them, the babies are so thin! Mrs. Finch seems to have abandoned them and Mr. Finch refuses to feed them. I hope they are ok!

Cutest Baby Deer

We saw 3 families of Killdeer. The first family had 2 chicks, the second (shown in photos) had 3 chicks, and the third had 1 chick. We watched the 2nd family as they were within feet of us. Two of the chicks behaved, staying together and listening to Mrs. Deer, the other was with Mr. Deer. This chick wouldn’t come over even when Mrs. Deer yelled at him. He came over after lots of yelling from Mrs. Deer but took a lot longer than he needed to. I wonder where these three nests were. We only found two.

House Sparrow Fledgling!

The first sparrow fledgling of the year!

Baby Mourning Dove with deformed beak!

Today we saw this baby Mourning Dove with a badly deformed beak. It tried to eat but the milo and corn were too big. Will it be able to live like this? The other doves were chasing it and being mean.

Its NOT a Cowbird! Its a Blue Jay!

It’s NOT a cowbird! It’s a blue jay! We saw it today and it has blue feathers, a black beak, and white and black on its face. The two eggs didn’t hatch so they are probably infertile.

Young Cowbird in nest

Baby Cowbird in a nest. Eggs need ID. White with brown speckles. The eggs are about an inch long. There are two eggs. The nest was made of mostly sticks and lots of white down feathers. Any ID?

Brown-headed Nuthatch Feeding Young

The Brown-headed Nuthatch pair (was a cooperative breeding situation with former juvenile from prior brood, but that one has moved on) has been tending to their hatched young. Managed to get great videos at multiple angles showcasing feeding, fecal sac removal, and young peeking out. Lots of vocalizations by parents and young. They’ve grown so big!

Carolina Wren Babies

Our “Workshop Nest” built by the Carolina Wren contained two beautiful little eggs, which we were pleased to observe as successfully hatched today (Easter Sunday)!

The Cardinals Are Hatching!

A neighborhood cardinal nest with 3 eggs has begun to hatch! We’re actually not 100% sure if they are all cardinals or if a cowbird snuck in there, but we are very excited to see the first healthy young!

Baby downy woodpecker gets a scare!

Chickadee Family

This looks like a Chickadee family but I’m not sure. Definitely a fledgling and 2 adults but the one above looks like a Chestnut-backed and the adult below looks like a Black-capped, the baby looks a bit more like a Chestnut-backed too. Do they cross breed?
