Sad day for the Mourning Dove flock

All the birds took off, all but one dove, a hawk cruised over the yard, looking for prey, it spotted the dove, it swooped down, hitting the dove so hard that it was killed instantly, it carried the ripped-up, lifeless dove and carried it near the cucumber bed, I tried to get a picture, it then took off and I got a bad photo. The dove was the first bird to be killed at the feeder. I believe it was a female Mourning Dove.

Ducks…at my feeder!

These ducks have been flying over, and now they landed on the fence and ate from the feeder! We live in a neighborhood and the closest water is a bayou. I never thought that ducks would be the newest feeder birds!

Fire Ants at the hummingbird feeder

There are fire ants on the hummingbird feeder. The hummingbirds have not come yet. Should I get an ant moat or is there a cheaper option?

Any ideas on how to get rid of the ants? Will the hummingbirds come if the ants are there? Will they bite the hummers?

Chickadee, Bluebird, & Nuthatch.

Rare Bluebird visit to the feeders. There was 2 males & 1 female.

Tufted Titmouse Loves Feeders

Hoping some more juncos come! I could only get one picture.

Carolina Chickadees

The chickadees have been coming every day since December 19. They have come to almost all my feeders. They are such cute birds.

Carolina Chickadees, Palm Warbler, Chipping Sparrows, Mourning Doves.

So many birds at my new woodpecker log feeder, tube feeder, platform feeder, and seed block feeder.

Chipping Sparrows, Northern Cardinal, Cooper’s Hawk, The Peep, House Sparrow and Mourning Doves.

There are now about 30 Chipping Sparrows!

Hummingbird Advice Needed.

The hummingbirds at our feeder are attacking and chasing each other! Yesterday I saw three female Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds fighting! We got two feeders and put them in different places but they are still fighting! What can I do to make them not fight? I saw a male that got attacked and the feathers on his belly were coming off! Also 1 adult female Ruby Throat has a strange scar. She didn’t have that before. I saw her one day with now scar and the next day with a scar. She has been attacking the other females and males. Also, we saw an adult male with the same problem. See photos

Hummingbirds

Here are the hummingbirds that visited yesterday. We also saw a male and female black-chinned hummingbird. (Not at the feeder) Also. the shimmery part of a male hummingbird’s throat is called a gorget.

Meet Petey the Hummingbird

This is Petey (by the way my mom named him). He’s adorable and I’ve gotten some really cute photos of him but he’s become a feeder bully. He only recently started to guard the feeder like this. Before this, sometimes you’d see one hummingbird chase another away, but now it’s gotten to the point where the only time other hummers can get a drink is in the morning. Sometimes, a female will fly towards the feeder and Petey will start attacking her, then while Petey’s still attacking the first female, another will come. This has happened 4 or 5 times but every time he somehow manages to chase them both away without either one getting so much as a sip. I hope he lets off on the feeder guarding soon.

This Finch dreams of being a Hummingbird

I set up our hummingbird feeder right next to the Ring camera so that we could watch the hummingbirds come to the feeder. One day, I was looking through the footage and was surprised to this male House Finch land on top of the feeder. He sat there for a minute, he even preened himself, then he just flew off. I’m assuming he was just attracted by the colors.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird Fun – Traveler and the Troubles

We put together a fun video of our very first Ruby-throated Hummingbird we call “Traveler” having a time with two new “troubles” visiting at the Homestead. We have 4 feeders out now, but this was at the time we had just one and didn’t know until that day that we had more visitors. Lots of close up video of Traveler and his friends feeding!

First Hummingbird 2021

We observed our first hummingbird visitor for the 2021 season on 3/18/2021 – a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird visited our feeders in the evening hours.

Hummers

I use one dollar hummingbird feeder, they last about a year. Hummers love them.

Where are the hummers?!

About a week ago, I was watching the birds flock to my feeder. I was distracted by all the other birds, so for ONCE I was not thinking about hummingbirds. Then, all of the sudden, a tiny blur of green darts into the chaos. I was startled, so it took me a second to comprehend what it was. Then it stopped for a few short seconds, and hovered. I saw it’s red throat. Oh my gosh! I thought. It’s a hummingbird! He dipped his bill into the feeder for about 2 seconds, then quickly flew away. I haven’t seen any since. Hummers are my favorite bird, so knowing they’re in the area and then not seeing anymore is frustrating! Has anyone else seen any in Kentucky or have any tips on attracting them? Please help me! I’m dying here! 🙏🏼😩

Why aren’t goldfinches coming?

I’ve hung a sack of nyger/thistle since winter and only one goldfinch has come during the winter. My area has a lot of mature shade trees; maybe that’s why. The sack is also moldy. Any suggestions for attracting them?

A Common Grackle is eating my Peanut Suet.

On www.feederwatch.org it says that suet cages are not a Common Grackles’ favorite type of feeder, so I’m guessing they only come to this one because it does not hang vertically.

2020’s First Hummingbirds

We put together a little video showcasing our first 2020 hummingbirds. These Ruby-Throats showed up towards the end of March, and they’ve been around ever since! This short video features close-ups at the feeder and while perched in tree limbs, with funny little captions here and there.

“Invasion of the Starling Fledglings”

This spring we had about 12 Starling fledglings (pretty sure from more than one brood). They made a lot of noise and the parents were constantly busy.
