The first sparrow fledgling of the year!
In this entertaining GIF, Mama arrives and feeds her 3-day old babies.
Recorded with a Blink Mini camera.
The finches were both feeding when Mr. Finch pushed Mrs. Finch to the edge of the platform feeder, Mrs. Finch flapped her wings like a baby bird and opened her beak, Mr. Finch fed her, he also fed her in the neighbor’s cypress tree.
While birding along the C&O Canal in Maryland, I heard begging noises just behind me, and turned to see a Downy Woodpecker feeding nestlings in a tree cavity a few feet away.
Mother Cardinal and her baby
Male house sparrow feeding young male. One reason to keep your feeders up in summer is so that the parent birds can feed the babies! Suet is one of the first things many birds feed their babies so it’s very important to leave it up all year.
Mother Grackle feeding baby grackle, Sorry for the bad photo! Here is another time we saw Great-tailed Grackles and took pictures ~ https://ebird.org/checklist/S113698000
I think he got a worm?

Nuthatch feeding young in a bluebird house.
Mid June, 2021 These chicks were about a week or so away from fledging. Both parents fed the chicks.
Fledgling Eastern Bluebird is bringing a mealworm to the nest box to feed the nestlings while the adult male is also feeding the nestlings.
Feeding time just prior to fledge
This was my first look at one of the young since I stopped nest box checks a week before fledging. We are first-time Bluebird landlords, and put a lot of thought and effort into giving Bluebirds a chance. One week after the brood of 4 fledged, the parents returned with a couple of the intrepid youngsters.
The Brown-headed Nuthatch pair (was a cooperative breeding situation with former juvenile from prior brood, but that one has moved on) has been tending to their hatched young. Managed to get great videos at multiple angles showcasing feeding, fecal sac removal, and young peeking out. Lots of vocalizations by parents and young. They’ve grown so big!
This Brown-headed Nuthatch pair has been observed during the past month plus working on constructing a nest cavity in a Pine log fence post. The two frequently alternate, changing places between who is working on the cavity and who is keeping watch in the nearby Sweet Bay tree, and exchanges of feeding take place between the two (included in this video).
As a note: please pardon the initial shaking of the camera, as I finally got my tripod set up towards the end. While you will hear the calls of these birds, there are the sounds of other birds in the background, including our ducks and chickens.
Watched Red-bellied Woodpecker male & female flying in and out of a wooded area of the yard. Found the entrance hole and soon saw a chick peeking out.
Both adults came & went, and fed the chick. At this point, I cannot tell how many chicks are in the cavity. I could hear peeping as the adults approached. Will keep an eye on this nest site.
I found Papa Woodpecker feeding baby woodpecker suet. At first i thought he was feeding his mate, (romantic) but it turns out it was actually his baby! So cute, brought tears to my eyes!
We put together a little video showcasing our first 2020 hummingbirds. These Ruby-Throats showed up towards the end of March, and they’ve been around ever since! This short video features close-ups at the feeder and while perched in tree limbs, with funny little captions here and there.
We had a House Wren nest in our garage, there were a lot of fledglings.
House Wren young being fed one day before fledging. These photos are from two feeding sessions: the photo in which the adult approaches the box is from the previous feeding – on this same day. Photos taken on July 4, 2019 – all presumed fledged July 5, 2019, leaving an empty, clean nest.
Papa Bluebird brings an insect breakfast to Mama, who is inside the nest box incubating 5 eggs.
A Humming Bird In Mid Flight….. So Beautiful…..
This Northern Cardinal pair was out at the feeder this morning, and the male was feeding his mate a bite of seed.
I am very fortunate to have a pair of eastern screech owls nesting in my backyard. Using my shed as a blind I set up at night at 830pm to take some videos of mom coming in to feed the owlets.
Enjoy seeing the 2 owlets fed worms and grubs.
Some photos I forgot to submit of the last fledgling being taken care of before fledging. He sure has nice parents! The cowbird nestling already fledged the day before.
❤️
I was lucky enough to have a pair of eastern bluebirds nest in one of my boxes this spring, where they laid 6 eggs and fledged 5 young. Several weeks after the young fledged, the male brought two of the youngsters back to our garden to feed them mealworms, which is when I snapped this photo. It was sheer magic watching them and I stayed outside, quietly snapping away for 30 minutes until they left.
I first noticed this pair of Mourning Dove fledglings hiding in my garden, waiting for mom to come back with food. She was feeding them millet from under my feeders.
First nesting attempt a success! Baby Bluebirds at 5 days and 33 days from first nesting of the 2016 season. 2nd nesting attempt has started with the female laying her first egg in the same nest box on 5-4-16.
This pair has been coming regularly to feed from my suet cakes. I’m wondering how long it will take for the young to figure how to go directly to the feeder rather than waiting for dad to do all the work. 🙂
I have more than one birdhouse but the swallows they always come back and like the same house, it’s adorable to see them how they protect their kids and how much they work looking for their meal
This young yellow-bellied sapsucker was very vocal during feeding time, which helped me to locate the nest. After waiting at a comfortable distance away from the nest but yet be able to identify the species, both parents came alternately to feed its young. Several minutes passed between each feeding. There was no way of knowing how many young they were feeding, in only one shot did a young one show itself. I visited the area the next day and heard the young calling again for food but after that day it was quiet and I believe they had fledged. This was a unique experience for me and my son.
This is a screen shot from a video I took.
