What a team!

I was in a nearby state park when I saw male and female Blue-gray Gnatcatchers repeatedly fly into this tree. Here, the male is giving nesting material to the female.

Mockingbird Nest

I got to photograph a nearby farm & in one of their small trees was this darling mockingbird nest.

Mockingbird Babies

These precious babies were a week old here. The family had a nest in a small tree right by our house. I had the privilege of photographing them once a day.

New beginnings!

These cliff swallows were in a big rush to begin their “home tweet home” nest on an adobe wall. Other swallow parents nearby had just moved into their brand new typical bird nest.

Eagles at Work

I was very lucky with this picture. Although you can’t see it, the adult eagle in the nest was clearly feeding chicks, pulling food from something at the edge of the nest and then feeding it to the chicks inside. I was taking pictures of that, and the other adult appeared right in the frame with something in its claws.

No Room at the Inn

I had a very nice fairy garden set up on some shelves on my back porch this summer. It was made up of geodes, Dept 56 fairy tale house, and fairy figurines. One day, I noticed the fairy figurines had been tossed off the shelf and replaced instead with a small grouping of sticks. I threw the sticks off the shelf, thinking my husband had did this as a joke. But he said he had no idea how the rearrangement occurred. Until the next day, we noticed that the fairies were gone once again and this time you could tell a nest was being built amongst the geodes. The next morning, my husband woke me up and exclaimed, “I know who is building the nest!” And I got up, looked outside and saw two mourning doves working together; one sitting and forming the nest and the other going and getting twigs. They were so beautiful and the nest so perfectly situated next to the fairy house, that we decided to let them stay. I did some research and found out who the female and male were. In this picture, the male had just given the female a branch to add to the nest. She searched amongst the other twigs and then, very carefully positioned the twig into the nest. It was fun & interesting to see them work together. They would work for awhile in the morning and then, disappear for the rest of the day, returning the next day to continue. They did this for about 4 days and then, finally stayed on the nest, after laying 2 white eggs.

Time To Turn The Eggs

I monitored the nesting loons on our lake during their second attempt of the season. I documented it because our loons have not had chicks for several years in a row. This photo was taken during week three, late June. The eggs went on to hatch, and two chicks were born.

Red-necked Grebe

My boyfriend and I went to Bronte Harbour to take photos of the boats and see some cliff swallows, but were surprised to see red-necked grebes building nests and incubating eggs! This was the first time I had seen this bird, and I’m glad to see her with her chicks-to-be!

Red tail Hawk on Nest

The thrilling experience of seeing the red tail hawk eyas stand and spread their wings on the nest as they grow.Photo taken at the local library on the third floor through a window with no disturbance to the nest.

Red tail Hawk Nest

I was eye witness to the adult Red tail Hawk fly in to the nest with its prey,in this case a small bird and drop it in the nest to feed family of three eyas. This photo was taken on the third floor of the local library where the nest was built in a pine tree and I took the photograph through the window without any disturbance to the nest.As the adult hawk flew in,I saw a small branch with leaf with the prey which was deposited in the nest and the eyas played with the branch as if it were a toy at a later time after feeding.

Mom Owl Babies and Squirrel

As I photographed the Great Horned Owl nest a Gray Squirrel ran up the tree with nesting material, she had a nest just three feet above the owls. Mom didn’t seem to care, but the little ones were interested and watched the Squirrel go by several times.

Four little eggs

have a beautiful garden that attracts birds, bees, butterflies etc. California Robin nested in one of the trellises close to our kitchen. My husband and I watched the whole episode from the day we found the bird started building the nest, found the tiny little bluish eggs, eggs just hatching, developing feathers, and the little ones opening their moths to be fed and fledging. We used a ladder to go closer and take photos. It was an amazing experience. I even published the story in birds and Blooms. The parents took such a good care of the nest, taking turns until the day the bird babies fledged. You see four little eggs in the nest.

Blue Eggs to Blue Birds

As part of our Wildlife Management I built bird boxes last winter. These babies were born in my first house. I built them with the hinge on the top so that I could peek in and check on their progress. Such a joy to be a part of.

Adult Wrens Sharing A Meal

Here, one adult Wren is feeding its mate a tasty meal of fresh spider while the mate tends to their brood of hatchlings…

“Feeding Time”

Adult Wren brings supper back to her peeps, with their wide-open little maws, who are pleading at the nest box opening…

Last To Fly…

This Chickadee peep was the last member of its brood to leave the nest…it seems to have a somewhat forlorn look on its face, as if it might miss all the warm snuggle factor, and company, of its siblings…

Ma and Pa did just fine keeping the last of the brood well-fed until it decided to make its leap of faith…

Turning over the eggs

While visiting the rookery in St. Augustine in April 2016, I got to observe tricolored herons building nests, courting, and, in this case, tending to eggs. The delicacy and gentleness that the adult used to move about the nest and turn the eggs was simply amazing.

Twins

While visiting the rookery in St. Augustine in June of this year, I was able to see tri-color herons at all stages of development with some parents still brooding eggs and many older juveniles practicing their flight skills. These two were staying on the nest, patiently waiting to be fed and not inclined to venture out of their safe spot.

Short-eared Owlets on Ground Nest

While travelling along a flat, dirt road surrounded by tundra, an adult Short-eared Owl was easily seen flying off its nest. A bit of careful and mindful searching resulted in this photo of the nest with owlets and even some crushed eggs in the right foreground.

We’re a Team

I found a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker nest high in a dead tree in the middle of a swamp. In this photo, the female parent has arrived with a snack for the nestlings and the male is just leaving.

Tree Swallow Nestlings

Three cute Red-breasted Nuthatch Nestlings looking out of Nest

Every chance I had I visited this nest. These little babies were adorable to watch as they all fought to look out of the nest. I love how the one on the very left eyes is closed as if it is annoyed with its siblings.

Spotted Sandpiper Eggs

I came across this nest while on a fishing trip. I had never seen a nest on the ground before, I will not forget how struck I was by the nest and 4 speckled eggs.

Perfect blue eggs

From my office window, I watched the creation of this sturdy cup of grass, the laying of three beautiful blue eggs, and the growth of the American Robin nestlings until they fledged and moved on.

Roseate Spoonbill Nest

This Roseate Spoonbill nest was located in a rookery in southern Louisiana. Many different species of birds nest at the rookery, including herons, egrets and spoonbills. Alligators also live there, eating all of the nest predators for the birds.
