Let’s Eat!

Where’s Mom?

highchair snag

baby barn swallows wait patiently on a snag (high chair area) to be fed.

new nests

we had a severe storm which knocked down 2 barn swallow nests under our deck with days old chicks.
my husband nailed up the plastic bins and returned as much nesting material as possible. we just randomly returned the chicks and the mothers came back about 2 hours later and the fledged normally!

Barn swallows

Barn swallows built nests under the eaves of all the picnic shelters at the Welcome Center off of I-40. These guys were keeping an eye on everyone coming and going.

Barn Swallow Fledlings

These young barn swallows were waiting for the parents to return with food. Although they have grown in all their feathers, the fuzzy tufts on their heads remained giving them a comical appearance.

Up Up and Away

Here swallow babies sit and wait as their mother is out gathering food. When she arrives they are very impatient to be fed. Both struggle to get to mother first. As the little one feeds, it’s older sibling flies over with mouth open to get fed

Barn Swallows get excited when a parent arrives with food

These Barn Swallows were nesting outside of my bedroom windows. One day I decided to poke my head out and take some photos. Moments before this image was taken they all looked asleep, but suddenly “woke up” as one of their parents flew in with some food.
