a memorable moment while photographing tree swallows on nest boxes in a local audobon sanctuary. found an egret feather was found and it was instant chaos as just about the entire colony wanted it! As soon as one would claim it and get it to a box, another would steal it. Often 2 or more birds would battle over it in mid air. The mob of sparrows managed to place this feather in at least 6 different boxes before the prize was finally claimed by one lucky pair.

Oh, the detail is beautiful! Congratulations!
“Hey! it’s mine!”
This is fascinating. I wonder what it is about egret feathers that make it desirable for nests?
A highlight of our nest monitoring season was when we opened a tree swallow box to check progress and a white feather fluttered out. Instantly an adult dipped down from its nearby perch, picked the feather from the air, and then, waiting until we closed the box, returned the feather to its nest.
That is amazing! I love the photo and your observations. Thank you
Great action photo! A friend of mine gives white feathers to nesting tree swallows in the spring, but I believe he uses chicken feathers. He stands in his back yard and lets go one feather at a time, and the birds snatch them in midair.
That’s incredible! What an awesome pic and story! Thanks for sharing it.
