Description

House Finch nest had 3 eggs 6-26-23 The next day it had only 1 egg. On 7-2–23 my husband saw a bird take off from the nest. He only caught a glimpse of it…slender gray sparrow size. As of today 7-4-23 the nest is empty. I haven’t seen a HF since the raid which is strange because they are always around. The bird population seems much different this year. Even the House Finches struggled raising their broods this year losing chicks along the way.

    3rd brood?

  2. Paula says:

    Yes…it was supposed to be.

Our second clutch of Bluebird eggs haven’t hatched. Nestwatch recommends you wait at least a month after the hatch date before removing the eggs so I’m going to wait a little longer but it’s been a few weeks and I don’t think the eggs will hatch.

Is the mother still incubating? If not then the eggs are infertile. Also, keep in mind that nests are protected for 2 weeks after the young fledge.

She isn’t incubating, I haven’t seen a Bluebird at the box since May 17. I’m going to wait another week or two just in case but I don’t think they’re going to hatch.

Watch closely. If you see any signs of the female incubating, or you knock on the house and fly out, still incubating.

Sadly, less than 20% of nests are successful. I’ve lost many, many nests. Nests near people do do better.
