That’s a female. I think the head with all red is the male.
Yes, females have a red nape, and males have a red nape and crown.
What type of hawk was it?
I don’t know. My husband saw it and said it was quite large…bigger than the Cooper’s Hawk we had seen before and bigger than our tube feeder which is about 22 inches.
Actually, I think it may be a Red Breasted woodpecker. I may be incorrect.
