All signs are leading me to believe this is a Carolina Wren’s nest, except one: I thought they nested in cavities. Although… my cousins have a Carolina Wren nest on their porch, and the opening (of the cavity and nest) is made strait down like this one. But theirs is located inside a plastic flower pot. Does anyone else have a guess that they’d like to share as to what kind of bird built this nest?

Yes, thank you. That’s very helpful. It DEFINITELY looks like a Carolina Wren nest.
Its those exact same measurements, it looks like one, and I’ve seen a Carolina Wren near here a few times. I want to put out nest boxes for them.
I agree with Micah
A great way to know for sure is to NestWatch this nest and see what the eggs look like. Eventually you’ll probably get a glimpse of the adults. But it does look like Carolina Wren, just in an unusual situation. But I have seen them nest in non-cavities as well. Best of luck.
We have a Carolina Wren nest in the propane tank under our deck, in a ledge of rock down by Herrington Lake, and one under the overhang of our play set roof, so yea, we have a lot near here. And don’t worry, I already have this nest site and 27 more on my NestWatch data page! 😁😊 I also already have 10 active nests, 18 eggs, and 4 chicks so far. I absolutely LOVE birds. If it were up to me, I’d have a hundred nest boxes hung up in our yard already. 🥴😋 no joke. I just put up a Carolina Chickadee tube the other day because I get tons of those adorable little birds at my feeders and it says they’re declining in our region. I also got my first Chipping Sparrow at my feeder today.
I think this might just be a mock nest, too. They’ll probably pick a different nesting location that’s actually IN A CAVITY. especially since I found it.
Birds don’t like when other ppl/animals/birds find their nest.
In a Propane Tank? I’ve never heard that before, but it makes sense! I just don’t want those little things to get hurt.
They are inside the top. I’ll get a picture and show you.
Cool I have seen House Wrens nest in Combines and other ranch equipment (I live on a ranch).
