Carolina Wren takes over!

A couple of prospective parents created this nest in a nice hanging plant on our porch-had to leave plant alone once they nested!

Protective Mama

This mama bird is proud & protective of her beautiful nest & eggs.

The Alligator

This chickadee keeps flying in and out of the alligator’s mouth. Unfortunately, it was too dark to take a photograph of the interior with the chicks, but this alligator is just about equivalent to a birdhouse anyways 😉
I also have a video of the chickadee flying into and out of the nest with baby chirping coming from inside the alligator. If you would like to see it, it is on my Flickr account. Here is the link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/arcticpug/14314875029/

Mama Chickadee in her nest

I was watching the female making her nest, she was quick. The moss I saw going in to the box. The rest I knew nothing of, until I opened the box. What a surprise! What a beautiful soft nest. The pair raised 6 babies successfully.

Home Nest Home

A pair of Barn Swallows decided to make a home on our front porch. I took a picture each day of the building process…this is the final product. It became the home to 3 babies that we were able to watch being fed and learn to fly from 🙂

Prim and Proper Nest Sitting

At Sandy Point State Reservation, on the Southern end of Plum Island, there is a large roped off area that is closed to protect nesting Piping Plovers and Least Terns. Their nests are right out in the open, on the flat sandy beach! There were many Terns flying in circles, obviously protecting their nests, but this on was sitting patiently on her nest, all prim and proper!

Robin nest in the vineyard.

This is our first nest ever in our vineyard.

Baya Weaver’s Nesting !

Baya weavers are found across the Indian Subcontinent and SE Asia where, in some areas, large flocks form on open grasslands, cultivated areas, scrub and secondary growth. Here we see construction of their hanging retort-shaped nests woven from strands of leaves.

This nest was captured on mid of May 2014, in INDIA.

The Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus)

The Purple Sunbird (Cinnyris asiaticus) is a small sunbird. Like other sunbirds they feed mainly on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young.

Swan’s Solitude at the end of Surf Road on Fire Island

The swans built their nest at the end of a walkway and in between two bulk heads on the Great South Bay in Ocean Beach, Fire Island, NY. Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorized carts would pass the swans all day, and they seemed undisturbed by the human activity. Beautiful sight to behold!

Nest with two eggs inside a plastic bag.

Blue-headed Vireo Nest

This is definitely my favorite nest so far that I have discovered.I like how they tie it to a branch allowing it to hang from there. And the assortment of old mans beard, along with lichen and birch bark makes it such a nice looking nest, and reminds me of a little purse.

Nuthatch

Roadrunner nest

A pair of Roadrunners built a nest in a prickly pear cactus in our yard and successfully raised five chicks. The nest was large, about four feet from ground level, and well situated so that the cactus pads shaded the babies most of the day.

Oh – I described it in the caption…

Strange nest in the wishing well

The building process took the mother bird a while and at one point, we thought she had given up. Not so. I’m always amazed with the design and materials used.

Killdeer: The ultimate home decorator

I found this killdeer nest and was so impressed by the decor that I took a picture of it. The sleek, modern, edginess of the bone on the right is balanced out by the beautifully landscaped green space on the left. Before you know it, this killdeer will probably have its own show on HGTV and be raking in the millions. Who said the life of a bird was hard?

Hobbit Hole wren’s nest

A Hobbit hole wren’s nest on the northwest porch column, built in 3 days, but was blown away by high storm winds and we never saw it again.

Mystery nest in the Crepe Myrtle

Wile walking under one of our crepe myrtles, I happened upon a rather unusual nest with a narrow beak peering out. Rather than get up close to look, I preferred to zoom in with my phone as best as I could and get a photo.

Looking out the window

Carolina Wrens built a nest between my storm window and living room window. Unfortunately the solo wren I thought they fledged was a cowbird.

Herons on a crane

The great blue herons living around the Port of Los Angeles have become quite creative with their nest-building. Several great blue herons have constructed nests on the rungs of several cranes in an abandoned shipyard. The parents of these chicks were even more daring– they built the nest on top of a pulley!

Lady Black-chinned Hummer sitting pretty

We only found this hummer and her nest because we saw her fly into it. The nest was extremely well hidden among the leaves and branches, and difficult to find even when we knew where it was. Kudos to the little lady for doing a job with marvelous perseverance.

Wood Duck in a Screech Owl nest box

This Wood Duck hen made a comfortable nest within my Screech Owl box. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box hoping to find a little owl.

Creative zoo nest

I wish this had been around for the strange nests in strange places contest. I work as an ape keeper at the Oklahoma City Zoo. We found this nest in a tire swing in the orangutan yard. In addition to the usual twigs and leaves, some little bird smartly built her nest out of a combination of orangutan hair, gorilla hair, and a bit of snake skin.

Killdeer Nest

This Killdeer family’s nest is in the middle of my gravel driveway/parking area. Visitors with horse-trailers have to maneuver around it.

Perfect nest for a Beautiful Bird

Every year this White-Eyed Vireo builds a nest in an orange tree at the Merritt Island National Wildlife refuge visitor center. The first time I was able to come across the nest was on my birthday. Finding it was more impressive since the nest was very small and the bird chose the very tip of the branch to build on. I was so excited to experience seeing the Vireo on the nest and even got to see the eggs hatch, along with both parents coming back and forth to feed the young ones. This is one of my favorite photos taken of the Vireo in the nest 🙂

Swallows in Bodie

Killdeer babies & egg

In the middle of the football field at the local high school, the Killdeer made their nest. One baby is out of the nest, 2 are freshly hatched, and one egg to go. All 4 survived.
