While visiting the lab earlier this spring, I observed this Mourning Dove nesting above the entryway to the visitor’s center. It appears she built her nest over an old robin nest?

Getting ready to leave the nest!

Phoebes have been nesting in our old barn every year for several years now. There were at least three fledglings in this nest, possibly a fourth. Must of been very crowded!

Baby Carolina Wrens, just a couple of days old. The nest was built in a geranium plant on our front porch. I bought live meal worms for mom to feed the little ones. They grew up so quickly. It was an amazing sight to behold.

Nestled in the Pine

A pair of bald eagles has been nesting in rural Leon County, Texas for at least four years. The pine tree where they built this nest is one of only a small number of pines in the vicinity but is well suited to a bald eagle nest. Using a long lens I was able to photograph this year’s offspring still on the nest from a distance.

Keeping it Clean

Three cute Red-breasted Nuthatch Nestlings looking out of Nest

Every chance I had I visited this nest. These little babies were adorable to watch as they all fought to look out of the nest. I love how the one on the very left eyes is closed as if it is annoyed with its siblings.

Spotted Sandpiper Eggs

I came across this nest while on a fishing trip. I had never seen a nest on the ground before, I will not forget how struck I was by the nest and 4 speckled eggs.

Preparing for the babies

This Double-crested Cormorant is carrying nest material to arrange his nest. They have started to lay eggs now and are still working to improve their nests. Their nests usually are getting highly damaged when Bald Eagles are flying by. As a flight response, the cormorants are flying from their nests and taking nest material with them while they panic. As a researcher on Mandarte Island (Song Sparrows) I have to opportunity to observe the cormorant colony on a daily level while watching our Song Sparrows. Since they are so sensitive, we have always be aware of them and keep enough distance. When they fly from their nests, Northwestern Crows and even Gulls usually steal their eggs out of the nests! This picture was therefore taken with a telephoto lens.

These 3 were getting pretty cramped in this nest. I told my granddaughter that they would be flying away any time now. Sure enough, we went back out a couple hours later and they were all gone. They must have been waiting for us to leave.
