Baby Red Tail Hawk

The big old abandoned nest in the back yard was refurbished this year and 2 Red Tails hatched. This curious one peeped over the edge at me. They have now fledged and are receiving hunting lessons.

Nesting Wood Thrush

Walking along Patriots Path I noticed this nesting wood thrush right by the trail. As I snapped a few pics, the bird flew away to a nearby branch. I couldn’t see what was in the nest and I didn’t want to agitate or disturb anything so I left them alone.

Kentish Plover egg and chicks

I’ve been here in Korea for 2 years due to the army/social service in Korea and was lucky enough to be a wildlife technician for a year to work with several ornithologists. One of the works that I did was doing nesting surveys for Kentish Plovers and Little Terns in South Korea. You will find their nests and eggs usually in May and June. Populations of these two species has been decreasing due to anthropogenic disturbances and predators such as raccoons.. Now I have less than 2 weeks left until going back to Minnesota. Just want to share a pic of cute Kentish Plover chicks.

Great Crested Flycatcher Waiting Patiently for More Nesting Material

Waiting for mate to bring more nesting material. This was taken June 5, 2012 in our backyard. Submitted another photo with nesting material in its mouth. They chose this Screech Owl box to have their babies.

Great Crested Flycatcher Building Nest

We have had Great Crested Flycatchers nest in our boxes before, but this was the first time they decided to nest in the Screech Owl box. We watched both male and female bring long pieces of nesting material to the box. We had a “birds eye” view from our lawn chairs and watched them eventually bring food to the box. One day when we were watching them, a Coopers Hawk sat in a nearby tree and swooped down on the female. I really thought the Coopers got her, but he didn’t as she showed up at the box the next day. This photo was taken on June 5, 2012.

Time for a little housekeeping.

Black-chinned hummingbird nest housekeeping. Nikon D300S 70-299mm zoom at 200mm 1/400 at f/4.5 ISO 1000

This nest was located in an Texas live oak tree in our front yard. It was built right at eye level from a second story balcony on our house and provided a fantastic vantage point for watching this little female raise two chicks. The nest was tucked under a canopy of leaves and was never exposed to the sun. The day this photo was taken we watched her ride out a thunderstorm and accompanying winds. so the nest needed a bit of tending to.

Loon Love

I got this shot on the lake that our cabin is on. (Swan Lake).
This mother/father loon was so patient. And did not get upset when I took the picture.
I just love loons.

Worms Again?

This Robin’s nest was placed in the exact right spot of our Bradford Pear tree to photograph from our second story bedroom window. I discovered the nest after the eggs were laid and documented the process until the final nestling fledged. A great experience.

Eastern Bluebird showing off her gathering skills

This female Eastern Bluebird and her mate built a nest over about ten days. The male tried to supervise, but was very little help. Every time the female came with nesting materials she appeared to be waiting for the male to either notice what she was adding or seek his approval. I have a hilarious video of them “arguing” over what should be included and what shouldn’t!

Northern Cardinal nest and eggs

This nest was built in our Christmas tree that we planted after the holidays.
