Bushtit nest

In a tree I and my German shepherd walk by many times a day. I saw two little birds pecking at a large oblong mass, and they returned several times. I will try for a better photo!

Bushtit nest

Observed nest-building begin in March through May 21. Both parents actively adding materials to the nest each day. Then nest abandoned? (don’t see any bushtits at or near nest now)

Bushtit nest building and ‘cleaning’

At the William L Finley National Refuge I observed this Bushtit nest very close to the trail. After capturing some stills of the two adults working on the nest I decided to shoot some video as well. Bushtits make a very interesting ‘sock-like’ nest of lichen, moss, grasses and spider webs. Because the nest is pliable, it’s almost comical to watch the adults as they move around in the nest!
