Mourning dove nesting in my hanging basket

I hang two flower baskets by my front door every year. This year, the very day after I hung these I saw the beginnings of a nest. I left it be. A bird would be way cooler than some annual flowers. Sure enough, within a few days I saw a mourning dove sitting on there. So our front door is off limits for awhile. Mama bird has a good spot. The overhang is protecting her from the rain right now. She’s out of reach of pretty much any predators. I have lots of pine trees in my yard and they have nested there many times. This is a first for the flower pot. Very cool indeed.

Mourning Dove Nesting

Video captured by my Arlo home security camera as dove returns to her nest. Video taken on 2/6/2018 (2 days following first egg) The weather has been seasonal with temperatures in the high 70’s.

Overnight, the 2nd egg was laid and discovered in the morning.

Excited about 2nd egg since I thought that only one egg would be laid.

Mourning Dove Nesting

Nesting is occurring outside my Condo Unit and is being monitored by an Arlo Home Security camera. I can observed this nest without disturbing the nest from the inside via my desk top computer. I have only observed one egg at this time.

Urban Nesting

A pair of Mourning Doves chose the top of the old alarm box to build a nest and hatch their young. This location is on the side of my house and is protected from the elements, and out of reach for most predators. Just not a lot of space.

What I found on my vacation in Illinois

Recently I went on a vacation to Illinois to see a cousin’s wedding. During this stay, I have found many bird nests and these are some of the ones that I found.

Petunia’s nest 2017 (3rd yr)

For the last 3 years we have a pot of petunias hanging on the front porch.
We named the dove couple petunia and peter since they keep returning.
I’m sure their previous offspring are still around the house.
On some days at the feeder we have 20 doves 🙂
I like to think I’m helping, my neighbors I’m sure don’t agree….

Doves are almost fledglings.

2 Mourning Dove babies

After only seeing one egg a month ago in the nest, Momma never seemed to leave again for me to check on it. I saw her up there a couple days ago sitting next to one baby. Then today I went out and there were 2 babies!!! So excited. She must have laid her other egg and then kept her young guarded toward the back of the nest where I could not see them. Congratulations Momma Mourning Dove on 2 beautiful babies.

Petunia’s babies all grown so quickly!

Continuing my nest watch since the beginning of June, Petunia has 2 full grown chicks and they are growing so fast. They have already left the nest but remain around the house. They are not camera shy and sit calmly when I am near. Such a great experience. I will post another pic of them foraging in the front yard.

I fledged!!!

Petunia the mourning dove

A couple of weeks ago I submitted a pic of a dove nesting in our pot of petunias. I call this Petunias nest.
She lets me go near and take pics. I have one of the eggs and another later of the chicks. I saw them for the first time today!

Petunia’s Nest

We have 2 mourning doves nesting right now one in front and one in the back yard. I have perfect view of the hanging pot of petunias thus we named this one Petunia’s nest 🙂

Petunia’s Nest

This dove nest is located in a hanging pot of petunia’s on our front porch, next to the kitchen window. We can see daily the activity, and have a good view of her.

Mourning dove nest

We’re afraid that this mourning dove nest has been abandoned, since we haven’t seen the parents for a week or so. We haven’t been watering this hanging spider plant just in case we’re wrong, though..The first time this nest was used, the eggs weren’t abandoned.

Dove Family

During the winter of 2014, a dove couple visited with us be sitting on our deck many days. They seemed to watch us. This past month, mrs. dove nested in one of our window boxes. We watched from our window how attentive she was all the way through them flying the nest and now hanging out on our deck. The babies stay on the deck all day. Mom and Dad come back to check on them. They get fed, sit, groom each other and do other bird teachings. daddy dove will call and it’s almost as of he is teaching the young to follow. He will fly over to a chair or other ledge, etc…call and they follow when they feel they can make it. It’s so adorable to watch. Very loving parents!

As I write this, I am sitting on the deck across from them. They groom and sleep. The first night I did this, Mom and Dad sat on the wire above us watching.

Mama and 2 Babies

She sat on them a lot the first few days….today was the first day we saw the babies sitting on their own beside their mom. They seem to love their messy but cozy home.

Baby doves in the gazebo.

Last year, I discovered a dove nest inside the rafters of my backyard gazebo. She had one baby who I got to watch grow up and she eventually flew away. Left the nest alone and to my delight, the doves returned to the nest this year and they are raising two new babies. The papa dove often can be seen on top of my storage building keeping watch for the feral cats who frequent my backyard.

Welcome, baby birds!

Mama Bird

We found 2 eggs in this nest in our pine tree one afternoon. By early evening the mama bird had come home to sit on them……..

Patio Babies

Found mother bird sitting on top of a flower pot on my patio. My closing of the screen door started mamabird and I was able to capture this photo. Since then she has been back and is sitting a top the eggs – I have been mindful not to utilize my patio. She appears to be a Mourning Dove.

Sally the Dove

Last Saturday I was sitting on my deck looking at the back brick wall of my house that had a planter attached to it. I was wondering what I was going to plant in it when I noticed a feather sticking out. I approached and to my surprise, it was a Mourning Dove … I have no idea how long she has been in there but it is right outside the back door of my home. She’s beautiful!
