eastern bluebird eggs & nestlings

What kind of chicks are these?

My dad took me to the Kentucky castle’s farm yesterday, and we found four active nests.

Killdeer mama a single parent

I have been watching this Killdeer bird and her nest for a little over a week now. According to all the articles I have read this species is monogamous and both parent birds take part in the nest protection and incubation process. Sadly this Killdeer seems to be a single parent and often has to leave the nest alone in search of food. Last night she was gone the whole night. I am hoping her eggs did no freeze as we are still having some nights that drop to freezing temps ; until June arrives. I will keep on the lookout for the mother and keep monitoring the nest. I have yest to find a specific answer on how long the Killdeer eggs can be viable without incubation and freezing temps.

Dark-eyed Junco Nest – 3rd floor balcony birdhouse

The old bird house on our tiny balcony on the 3rd floor was chosen by a pair of Dark-eyed Juncos for nesting. These resourceful little birds have made some amazing shifts in behavior to adapt to urban development. Even watching them build the nest, we weren’t convinced they’d use it. But the other day, lo and behold… two little eggs!

The Cardinals Are Hatching!

A neighborhood cardinal nest with 3 eggs has begun to hatch! We’re actually not 100% sure if they are all cardinals or if a cowbird snuck in there, but we are very excited to see the first healthy young!

Some Robin Nesting in CT

Our house has become popular this year with Robins. We have two nests on opposite side of the house and active nesting is taking pace

House Finch Eggs!!!

On my porch, there is this little white hanging bench swing that is supposed to be a bird feeder, but I never filled it up. And now, there is a beautiful pair of House Finches nesting in it!
The eggs are SO cute!

Bluebird’s First Nest

Eastern Bluebird Eggs

This evening when I monitored the nest box, I was pleasantly surprised to see two eggs! I put this nest box up last summer, hoping it would be used this year. It was fun to watch the female collect dried grass from my yard and carry it to the box to construct the nest. I look forward to watching my backyard Bluebird family grow this Spring and Summer!

Eastern Phoebe Nest Under Deck

I discovered this Eastern Phoebe nest under our deck in an area where it won’t get rained on. The phoebes have been active on the nest since they started to lay the eggs, but only in recent days once they had laid a full clutch have they been even more protective of the nest.

Starling nest

If ya can’t beat em, work with them. Which is why we give our starling pair a larger nest box in our shop they can nest in, so we don’t have issues whith taking over swallow nests on our property. Luckily our pair isn’t very confrontational unless it’s with predators (wich is quite usefull!)

Chickadee on next

As I approached the box, the male flew out, but mama stayed put. I think she was actually sleeping when I snapped the shot. I later noticed a spider on the side of the box, who I thought was an unwelcomed visitor. A friend shared that it will manage the insects in the box, so is actually a beneficial guest. There are 6 eggs in the nest, which I first spotted about 2 weeks ago.

Our first confirmed clutch of 2017…This nest site is directly adjacent to our deck, and has been used for several years as a nest site…last year, three batches of baby Robins came from this site.

MCHM Robins

This was fun experience, since the nest is six feet and below my window, I was able to observe the nest with some regularity. I took over 2,000 photos over the whole month, with my telephoto lense. This way i did not disturb the family by walking close to the site.

Three little robin eggs!

Eastern Phoebe nest

We found that the Eastern Phoebes came back to reuse last year’s nest even though the shed/garage it is situated on was moved some several hundred feet across our property! 6 eggs were laid, can clearly see only 4 hatchlings so far.

Our first bluebird nest

An Eastern Bluebird pair arrived on March 2, 2016. The selected our Gilbertson Nest Box and laid 5 eggs starting on April 2. The babies fledged on May 23. What a thrilling experience!

Six Bluebird Eggs

Usually we see 5 eggs, but on May 24, 2014 we found 6. The same nesting pair is now waiting on their 3rd clutch (5 eggs this time) to hatch which makes 16 eggs this year.

Mourning dove nest

We’re afraid that this mourning dove nest has been abandoned, since we haven’t seen the parents for a week or so. We haven’t been watering this hanging spider plant just in case we’re wrong, though..The first time this nest was used, the eggs weren’t abandoned.
