Flickers grow fast
Look how these flickers have grown. It’s been a long journey to get to this point with the invasive starlings destroying flicker nests. Learn how I did it: http://www.kansasnativeplants.com/yard_birds_northernflicker.php

Julianna – in her nest
Digiscoped of Julianna, our broad-winged hawk in her nest in our suburban front y are.
Baby Carolina Wrens – 4 days later
This nest in in a potted sage plant on a shelf on our first floor apartment patio. I count four beaks in this photo, but there were six eggs originally and no evidence of death or any unhatched eggs, so we believe there are six young in there just piled on top of each other (as they do). This photo was taken with my cell phone on 5/19/15. Babies are awake but still very quiet. The one looking at me in the picture had his mouth open until he realized I wasn’t going to give him any food. Mama and Papa are excellent hunters and are frequently seen returning to the nest with large bugs for their babies.
1st Gray Catbird Nest
Catbird nest has 4 eggs now! 😀
They grew up so fast!
The first baby Robin fledged yesterday! It was so cool to watch! Can’t wait to see the others fledge!
I’m so proud of the Momma and Daddy Robins! First House Sparrows destroyed their nest, then an American Crow flew up to their nest, but none of the babies were harmed thank goodness!

Eastern Phoebes in the Portico – 2013
These Eastern Phoebes were hatched and raised just outside my front door inside a small portico. The mom and chicks became very comfortable with our use of the door and sometimes my snapping some photos through a cracked door. The mom would never stop on the nest to feed but rather would fly by and feed in mid flight. They all seemed to get enough to eat. My wife happened to be out front when they all left at the same time in a little baby bird flock and they never returned. A new nest goes up every year now even though it took 13 years before the first nest appeared on the house.

Young Violet-green Swallow
A young violet green swallow sticking his head out of his nesting box to be fed- he was quite bold and let me come quite close. They nested again the next year round, but the brood was killed by house sparrows.
Chip and Caroline’s nest
Feeding Time!
On 5/9 I found empty egg shells under the nest. On 5/12 I noticed her feeding at least 2 babies.
Baby Flickers are Talking at age 5 days old
After having starlings destroy the flickers nest last year, I became more vigilant in my trapping of starlings. It paid off this year and the flickers have 5 babies. Learn all about my experience with nesting flickers at http://www.kansasnativeplants.com/yard_birds_northernflicker.php

Baby Carolina Wrens
This nest is in a potted sage plant on our first floor apartment patio. These babies haven’t made a peep yet. There were six eggs, but I can only count five sets of wings in this picture. However, there may be one more little guy in the back, it’s just difficult to see in there.

This our third Robin nest!
Barn Swallow Eggs and Nest
This nest is a continuing nest for at least three years. Additional years of nest building can be seen. Sitting on barn’s support beams, this nest is about 15 feet above ground.
Front Porch Phoebes
In Spring 2012, a Say’s Phoebe couple attempted to build a nest on this light fixture, with no success. I placed the plastic container there, tying it to the light fixture, and they immediately built their nest in it. We have really enjoyed watching the nesting and fledgling process from such a close point of encounter. We still use the front porch to enter/exit our house, and the birds have adapted beautifully. They return each spring and right now, we have 4 fledglings from the first batch for 2015.
Hungry Babies
Tree Swallow in Bloom
This tree swallow loves its nest box so much that upon routine monitoring it doesn’t even leave the nest.
Chipping sparrow nest containing a cowbird egg

Crest Avenue Anna’s HB
This little Anna’s Hummingbird built her nest around a lantern hook on the support beam of our patio. Not a bad location: protected from wind and rain, 3 feet from the sugar water feeder and the garden flowers. She’s getting used to us hanging out on the patio.
We’re expecting!

Front Door Cottage Birdhouse
After she raised her brood she had at the Back door birdhouse, she was looking at the next place that Pa Pa Carolina Wren started the nest. She liked what she saw since there’s a birdbath 8 feet away and several feeders hanging nearby with meal worms. The next picture is her hanging out to get some air while nesting on her 5 eggs.
Carolina Wren at back door birdhouse.
This is a picture of the birdhouse located at my back door. I have had 4 broods that have hatched at this house and usually in Feb/Mar time frame. This picture goes with my first logged nest watch. The babies stayed for about 2 month at the feeders close to the house. Now they hang out in the trees in the back yard.

Bluebird sits on the nest.
Once a week I check my bluebird boxes and count the eggs. I tap on the side of the box before I open it and normally momma bird will exit. This little gal refused to leave the nest. I took her picture and closed the door. I’ll check again in a couple days and maybe she will be more cooperative.

Plantation Oaks Goes to the Birds
The nest box I erected last year (2014) at my school served this friendly bluebird family this April, 2015. The students enjoyed observing the parents caring for their young by watching them fly to and from the nest box as well as viewing the nest camera video.
