Dark-eyed Junco, freshly hatched!

I’m lucky enough to have discovered this nest in one of my Strawberry baskets. I now have a nest camera on it.

Killdeer nest at Bob Evans Farms, Inc. headquarters in New Albany, OH

I monitor a Bluebird Trail here at Bob Evans Farms headquarters in New Albany, OH. While out checking nestboxes, I observed an adult Killdeer running ahead of me. Upon further investigation, I found it’s nest with, at that time, one egg. There eventually were 4 eggs in the nest and they have since hatched. It’s been fun for all of us here to watch the development of the hatchlings as they explore the campus!

“Backyard Parrot” visits our bird feeder

Since early in the spring the Painted Buntings seem to have decided to visit our backyard bird feeder and it has been beautiful seeing them this year.

Delilahs young have Fledged!

I’m going to miss these beautiful lil buggers, but I’m so blessed to have had them start their lives here with me. I’m certain I’ll hear them singing sweet nothings in my yard.

Barn Swallows 6/2016

Big open field nearby where about a dozen Barn Swallows fly every evening. Last week noticed they were checking out front porch. Did not take long to construct a mud nest up in a protected corner.

Blue Bird Territory Squablble

ANother Blue Bird couple was moving into an available nest box about 50 yards from the current Blue Bird couple that had a second brood started. This went on for about 15 minutes, and the females joined in also. When all settled down, the new couple settled in to the available nest box (in the front yard) and the current couple settled in back in their area (in the back yard). Both yards have their own food source and water.

A couple of nest mysteries

You can ignore the first mystery, it was a dead hummer at my feeder then after that I had a couple of nest mysteries, the still shots show what I was up against. First, a Black-capped Chickadee nest…and only one ‘hatchling’ with some four or five other eggs that never hatched. Second, a Western Bluebird nest that after the season was over I found a dead what I think was a female Violet-green Swallow in, underneath- and a couple of Bluebird eggs that never hatched. Two nest oddities.

Bushtit nest building and ‘cleaning’

At the William L Finley National Refuge I observed this Bushtit nest very close to the trail. After capturing some stills of the two adults working on the nest I decided to shoot some video as well. Bushtits make a very interesting ‘sock-like’ nest of lichen, moss, grasses and spider webs. Because the nest is pliable, it’s almost comical to watch the adults as they move around in the nest!

MCHM Robins Videos

These videos accompany my pictures submission.

MCHM Robins

This was fun experience, since the nest is six feet and below my window, I was able to observe the nest with some regularity. I took over 2,000 photos over the whole month, with my telephoto lense. This way i did not disturb the family by walking close to the site.

Nestbox treasure

Second year for wren activity in this primitive birdhouse, assembled by a child from a kit at a state park event. The pink eggs are lovely and will keep us watching for a month.

Melodys blue bird eggs

I’ve never had a blue bird try to nose dive my face before while trying to get a few pictures. I am very quick and I don’t touch anything. This birdhouse is in my everyday life and there is no way not to pass by it. But this mother is so aggressive! Several times she’s flown down straight at my face from up in a tree. She’s always watching me,apparently. Now I’m even more careful as to not make her feel that her young is in danger. But I do have to be able to access my yard! She chose to build in a high traffic area, and I’m so excited to experience the life of these birds. However, not so much at the expense of my face being rearranged! Anyone ever experience anything similar?

Delilahs wren youngins

The wren babes are almost fully feathered and parents are taking excellent care of them!

Food transfer and feeding time for three Peregrine Falcon chicks

For a few years now there has been a Peregrine Falcon nest in the spring at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. We’ve been going over for about four or five years now. We’ve seen them bring in a meal but it’s always been hard to tell what it is. And this is the first time I’ve so clearly seen the transfer for the mother to bring in the food, this time clearly a Bonaparte’s Gull. We first noticed the pair hanging in the air over a cliff face just like kites on a string, then one by one they left to return in five to ten minutes and were loudly calling as they performed this meal transfer. There was what looked like one attempt before the actual transfer, then the female ‘regrouped’ and came up again. Not until she firmly had it did he release but that was in mere seconds.

Empty Ovenbird Nest

On 6/11, I visited the ovenbird nest site and found 3 nestlings with pin feathers, huddled together. Three days later all three were gone. So, I took a photo of their empty nest. I checked the critter cam videos to see if they had been discovered by one of the many potential predators in our woods. I watched as a red fox trotted by, grey squirrel run up the nearby tree, and, most troublesome, three feral cats walking past the nest just one foot away. The nest and these babes were not discovered. Amazing!

It has been 9 days since I found the nest – empty. I hope the Ovenbird family is still thriving.

Junco Eggs

I’ve seen this Junco pair in and out of a hanging Strawberry basket for a week or so and just discovered it had 2 eggs in it yesterday.

Melodys setting on her egglets!

Our eastern bluebird,Melody ,has finished laying and is now starting to incubate! She’s so trusting. Every time I go outside we make eye contact. I just tell her sweet nothings or gently sing to her as I walk by. She’s very calm.

Helpful older sibling

This juvenile was feeding its younger siblings! With a bug in its beak, it made several attempts at getting into the box (it seemed to have difficulty keeping its grip on the wood below the hole), while the three-day-old nestlings squeaked plaintively within. At last it got in, and emerged a moment later empty-beaked.

Eastern Phoebe Natural Nest

This is an Eastern Phoebe nest located on the side of my house built on top of a vent pipe. The nest was discovered when I needed to clean the dryer vent located directly below the pipe vent. Nest construction began in late May. The first 4 eggs were spotted on 6/4 and the fifth egg appeared a day later on 6/5

Ovenbird Nestlings!!!!

I decided to check the Ovenbird nest on this very warm day (80 degree F.) of June 11, hoping that the parent was off the nest. And she was! I presume both parents were out foraging for lots of insects to feed these hungry babes.

This was a great day indeed! Now, I am eagerly and nervously waiting for the next phase – fledgling day!

Tree swallow nest box and young

My peace sign robin

This nest is awesome due to the fact it right outside my back door and have a great unobstructed view. Hopefully predators won’t interfere. Should start hatching next Fri. or Sat. 6/17 or 18th.

A new family of bluebirds

I monitor 5 bluebird boxes at the edge of our property. There were 5 eggs. 4 successfully hatched. The 2nd picture is at our mealworm station. by the way, one week later they are using the feeder themselves and there are 4 eggs in a new nest in the same box. The juveniles are assisting.

Bluebird Nestlings

These are the baby Eastern Bluebirds in my homemade log birdhouse. They are two out of five eggs From the looks of this picture I don’t think the box could have held three more! I also think their mother is no more, since I have only seen the male caring for them for the last week or so. Cute babies, though!

Oven Bird Eggs

I took advantage of the mom away from her nest and took this photo of the three Ovenbird eggs.

Ovenbird Standing By Nest

I first came to the area around 2PM on 6/6 and took photos of the Ovenbird in the nest. (Submitted a photo.) I returned about 2-3 minutes later. Now the Ovenbird was standing beside her nest. She remained still. I left after taking a few photos. It was a thrill and relief to see her still monitoring her nest. This morning I saw a large disturbed area of leaves about 30 feet from the nest. I believe a wild turkey was scratching around for something to eat. My husband and I have seen a large turkey in our woods and in this area on our critter cams. I’m sure that bird eggs and nestlings are on its menu.

I’m a nervous Nestwatcher. The odds of success seem stacked against this Ovenbird, given the number of predators that roam about in our woods.

Ovenbird barely in nest.

When I came to the nest area to stand at a safe viewing location, the Ovenbird was in the nest but on the edge with her breast partly showing. She did not move.

Ovenbird in Nest

I was walking my dog in our mixed woodlands when a small bird suddenly ran away, as if injured. I lost track of the bird. The next day, the same situation occurred. This time I looked around the area and found the Ovenbird’s ground nest, filled with three eggs. This was a most exciting find as I never dreamed I would ever find this specie’s nest. I went back later and took a photo of the female looking at me. Of course, I made sure I left the area a soon as possible. Now, I await the hatching day. And all the while, I will be very nervous because many predators roam our woods, including feral cats.
